French words in English

French influence on the English language is considerable, not least in connection with spelling. But notice the differences between UK/Euro English and American:

Words from French spelled in the UK fashion:
catalogue ▪ programme ▪ labour ▪ centre ▪ cheque ▪ colleague

In American, the spelling is:
catalog ▪ program ▪ labor ▪ center ▪ check ▪ colleague

Only the last word has this ‘gue', which the French use for a hard ‘g'.

This is probably why many Danes confuse ‘colleague' with ‘college'.

Otherwise the Frenchness is almost absent in American spelling.
Therefore, whether you write in American or British English - be consistent!
